  • Why Beta Tester Slots Can Be Rewarding

Video game lovers who want to get in on the action of seeing a new game in development can apply to become a beta tester . This unpaid position is considered "volunteer," but it can be rather
    rewarding.

Those who volunteer or sign up for beta tester positions actually play a pretty crucial role in the development of the end product. While the video game testing team has worked a title inside out

and backwards by the time a beta testing pool opens up, there can still be glitches, bugs and issues with a game that haven't been spotted before or that were, but weren't entirely fixed. The
best tester has the sole purpose of playing the unfinished game for fun and finding just those issues.

The beta tester position can be a rather fun one, but it does come with some responsibility. Those who sign on to fill beta tester positions are expected to actually play the game, look for
exploits, errors, graphics glitches and more. The beta tester is then asked to report these issues to developers so they can attempt to fix them before a title is sold to the general public.

Although financial compensation doesn't come along with most beta tester slots, there are many potential rewards for taking part in this phase of game development. They include:

Getting to see some of the workings of game development. The beta tester is in a position that few gamers ever find themselves in. Once a game has been released, especially large, complex

one, developers generally are so busy with patches and glitches, they don't want a dialogue with players in most cases. In the beta tester phase, that dialogue is desired and crucial. As issues
are reported and worked on, a beta tester gets to see how games evolve from a rougher state to the more polished finished version.

Having a say in development. There is something infinitively rewarding to an avid gamer to have a say in how a game actually ends up. While the beta tester role is not a huge one in this

process, it can be important. What is said during this phase of development is generally listened to. It might not be acted on, but it is listened to.

Feeling like a part of the team. While the beta tester is a volunteer, they can play a pivotal role in final development. In essence, the beta tester is a latecomer in the development process, but
    still an important player.

Beta tester slots are fun to fill, but they do come with some responsibilities. When beta tester positions are filled with people who care how games turn out, they can make a real difference in
    the process.
